Dublin, 12th October 2006:

One in Four SSIA holders Will Donate part of their windfall to Charity

Men more likely to donate than Women

One in four SSIA holders will donate some money to charity when their savings scheme matures, according to a recent survey carried out by the research company AskChilli on behalf of the Little Star Fund charity.

Surprisingly, men are more likely to donate part of their SSIA to charity than their female counterparts. 30% of male SSIA holders said they would donate to charity while only 22% of women will hand over part of their windfall on maturity to charitable causes. Over 340 Irish people were surveyed for this research.

In relation to what type of charities are likely to receive SSIA related donations, children's charities were the most popular choice at 42%, followed by Third World charities (37%) and cancer research charities (32%).

Conor Byrne of the Little Star Fund charity said: "The generosity of Irish people is well recognised around the world when it comes to charitable giving. It is encouraging to see that some people are thinking about giving a little of their windfall to help those less fortunate than themselves."

Another interesting finding showed that while winning the Lotto may be many people's dream, those surveyed by AskChilli showed a giving side. The majority of people surveyed declared they would give to charity if they won the Lotto. 95% of those asked said they would automatically give some of their winnings away to charity, with 38% saying that they would give 10% of their winnings.
